The ridges and rock faces of Gwanaksan above Seoul National University hold a concentration of active shamanist shrines maintained by mudang who have operated on the mountain for generations. The shrines are built into natural rock formations and range from small altar installations to larger ceremonial spaces. Ritual ceremonies take place irregularly — you may encounter one in progress and should observe from a respectful distance. The trail system connecting these sites is unmarked and requires basic navigation ability. Most visitors take the main summit path and never encounter this aspect of the mountain.
