The main ceremonial boulevard running from Gyeongbokgung south to Seoul City Hall was redesigned in 2022 with the King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin statues relocated into a broader public plaza. On weekends it hosts free performances, political demonstrations, and occasional markets. The view north — the palace gate framed by the mountains behind it — is the defining image of central Seoul and best from the pedestrian crossing at Gwanghwamun intersection.
