The residential streets of Hannam-dong between Itaewon and the Han River have accumulated one of the highest concentrations of independent specialty cafes in Seoul — a density that developed organically from the neighbourhood's foreign resident and creative-class population rather than from tourist interest. The cafes here tend to be smaller, more technically focused, and less Instagrammed than those in Seongsu or Hongdae. Several operate roaster-to-cup operations in spaces converted from residential ground floors. The back streets away from the main Hannam-daero give the best finds, particularly on weekday mornings when the neighbourhood is quiet.
