The alley streets of Huam-dong on the southern slope of Namsan have developed a community gardening tradition where residents maintain flowering plants in the narrow passages between the hillside houses. The sunflower plantings that give the main alley its name are at their peak in late July and August; the surrounding alleys are planted with seasonal flowers through spring and summer. The neighbourhood itself is one of the better-preserved hillside residential areas in Seoul — steep, walkable only on foot, and largely unchanged since the 1970s. The upper streets give clear views over the Yongsan area to the north.
