Paro Lake in Hwacheon — named for the Manchurian term for 'Chinese prisoners' killed in the 1951 Battle of the Hwacheon Reservoir — is one of the largest man-made lakes in Gangwon-do and holds the Paro Lake Sculpture Park along its southern shore. The Hwacheon area also holds the Peace Dam and the valley road along the Bukhan River toward the Cheorwon basin gives one of the more dramatic drives through the Civilian Control Zone approach. The late afternoon light over Paro Lake with the surrounding forest ridges in autumn creates the defining Hwacheon landscape that the ice fishing festival crowds in January cannot see.
