The residential alleys of Hyochang-dong hold a cluster of traditional Korean rice wine bars that have served the neighbourhood's working-class and elderly population for decades. The operations are small — a few plastic tables, a single barrel of house-fermented makgeolli, seasonal pajeon and kimchi — and the atmosphere reflects the neighbourhood rather than any bar district design. Several have been run by the same families since the 1980s. The combination of proximity to the Hyochang Park memorial site and the down-to-earth local bar scene gives the area a texture that the surrounding Yongsan development has not yet absorbed.
