Imjingak is the southernmost point of the Civilian Control Zone above Paju, accessible without a permit, and holds the Freedom Bridge — one of the bridges over which Korean War POWs returned south in 1953 — alongside the monuments, military hardware, and the atmospheric weight of the nearest publicly accessible point to the demilitarized zone border. The Dorasan Station beyond the checkpoint was built as the southern terminus of a planned Seoul-Pyongyang rail link and sits in a landscape of unused infrastructure. The Gondola ride to Dorasan Observatory gives views into North Korean territory. The combination of the historical material and the visible border landscape gives the Imjingak zone a character found nowhere else on the peninsula.
