Jagalchi in Nampo-dong is the largest seafood market in Korea and functions simultaneously as a wholesale operation, a retail fish market, and a seafood restaurant district. The covered market building holds tanks of live seafood on the lower floors; the upper floors are lined with seafood restaurants where market visitors can have their purchases prepared immediately. The outdoor section along the waterfront is where the older vendor operations survive — women selling dried seafood, live crab, and seasonal catches from open stalls in a format unchanged for generations. Early morning visits from 6 a.m. see the full wholesale operation before the day's retail traffic begins.
