The headquarters of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, sitting in the middle of central Seoul two blocks from Insadong. The main hall was built in 1938 and the surrounding complex is in continuous use — monks walk the grounds, lay practitioners perform prostrations, and the ancient zelkova trees in the courtyard are hundreds of years old. During Buddha's Birthday in May, thousands of paper lanterns fill the courtyard in one of the more visually striking events on Seoul's calendar.
