Donghae city doesn't get the attention Sokcho does, but Mureung Valley is one of the cleanest and most dramatic gorge walks in the whole province. The trail follows a boulder-choked stream through Mureunggye, past a massive flat granite slab called Mureung Seokgyeong where Joseon-era scholars carved their names into the rock — essentially a 400-year-old graffiti wall of literati. The full loop to Ssangyong Falls and back takes about 3 hours and never gets as crowded as comparable trails in Seoraksan. The entry village has a row of doenjang-jjigae restaurants that have been feeding hikers for decades.
