The Catholic cathedral that anchors the top of Myeongdong hill has been the physical and symbolic center of Korean Catholicism since 1898. The Gothic brick building is the oldest Western-style structure still standing in Seoul and was regularly used as a sanctuary during pro-democracy protests in the 1980s. The contrast between its quiet interior and the shopping frenzy two blocks below is genuinely startling. Free to enter during open hours.
