The commercial development around Banpo station and the Express Bus Terminal complex has evolved beyond the original terminal retail into a connected network of underground malls — Central City, The Hyundai Seoul annex, and the older Express Bus Terminal underground arcade — that together form one of the largest contiguous underground shopping zones in Seoul. The older sections of the Express Bus Terminal underground are where the independent operators survive — tailors, independent food stalls, Korean specialty goods shops that have been in the same unit since the 1980s. The contrast between the polished new retail and the older sections is sharp and worth exploring.
