The residential streets of Seochon west of Gyeongbokgung station function on a different schedule to the neighbourhood's well-documented cafe strip. Before 9 a.m. the alleys belong to local residents — elderly neighbours doing morning exercise, bakeries just opening, the occasional artist emerging from a studio conversion. Several of the longer-running independent galleries on the back streets have no signage and are discovered only by walking. The neighbourhood was home to painter Lee Jung-seob and poet Yun Dong-ju; the streets have changed less than the central cafe zone suggests.
