Seochon — the neighbourhood west of Gyeongbokgung — was historically the residential quarter of the middle rank officials and artists of the Joseon court and preserves a denser collection of traditional alley patterns than Bukchon to the east. The neighbourhood held several significant 20th-century figures including the poet Yun Dong-ju and the painter Lee Sang, whose former residences are marked. The lane network between Cheongunhyoja-dong and Pil-dong is walkable in a few hours and the combination of old courtyard houses, independent cafes in converted spaces, and the Inwangsan ridge immediately above gives the area a vertical dimension absent from the flatter Bukchon.
