Cheongnyeongpo is a river loop on the Donggang River near Yeongwol where the young Joseon king Danjong was exiled after being deposed by his uncle in 1455 — one of the most poignant episodes in Korean royal history. The loop is virtually surrounded by water and accessible only by a short boat crossing; the pine forest covering the island is one of the finest old-growth pine stands in Gangwon-do. The royal residence pavilion reconstruction and the surrounding memorial stones give the site a weight that is entirely disproportionate to its small scale. The adjacent Jangneung royal tomb where Danjong was eventually buried is 10 minutes away and completes the historical circuit.
