One of Korea's most architecturally distinguished university campuses, founded in 1885 and spread across a wooded hillside in Sinchon. The main Underwood Hall — a Gothic stone building at the top of the central avenue — is one of the most photographed buildings in western Seoul. The campus is freely accessible to visitors and functions as a public park: students, couples, and neighbourhood residents walk the central avenue lined with ginkgo trees, which turns gold in late October. The outdoor amphitheatre and the older stone buildings pre-dating Korean independence give the campus a rare sense of permanence in a city that rebuilds constantly.
