One of East Asia's largest coastal wetland ecosystems, Suncheon Bay is where half a million migratory birds stop annually — but most visitors don't realize the reed fields change character completely by season. In late autumn the golden reeds stretch for kilometers in every direction, best seen from Yongsan Observatory at dusk when the tidal channels catch the last light. The adjoining National Garden (opened 2013) was Korea's first, built on reclaimed land with a deliberate no-car-access buffer zone to protect the wetlands. Get there before 9am to beat the crowds and catch low-tide mud flat patterns that disappear by midday.
