Taebaek is the highest city in Korea at around 700m elevation, and in late July and August the highland meadows on Taebaeksan's lower slopes — particularly the area around Geomryong Meadow (검룡소) and the headwaters of the Hangang River — become dense with wildflowers in a way that surprises visitors expecting dark mountain forest. Geomryong Meadow is where the Han River technically begins, and Koreans make a quiet pilgrimage to stand at the source. The town itself has a fascinating coal mining heritage: the Taebaek Coal Museum is unglamorous but honest, and former miners still run some of the restaurants near the museum.
