Yongmunsa temple at the base of Yongmunsan is interesting but not the reason to come. The reason is the ginkgo tree standing beside it: 1,100 years old, 42 meters tall, designated as Natural Monument No. 30 by the Korean government. It is one of the oldest living trees in Korea and is said to have been planted by the founder of the Goryeo dynasty. In late October the tree turns a saturated yellow that is visible from the hiking trail above. The tree is not roped off or behind glass — you can stand directly beneath its canopy. The mountain trail beyond the temple is a moderately difficult 3-hour return hike with strong views of the surrounding valley.
