Seoraeseon Island: Seoul’s Han River Date Spot (Canola Field, Rainbow Fountain, Sebit Islands)
Most Han River parks in Seoul are wide-open spaces you walk through and leave. Seoraeseon is different — it’s a small island tucked between Dongjakdaegyo and Banpodaegyo bridges that actually gives you somewhere to be, not just pass through.
The island was formed during the Han River Comprehensive Development Project between 1982 and 1986. Today it’s one of Seoul’s better-kept date spots — largely because it requires a little more intention to get to than the main riverside paths.
What’s There
Spring (late April – mid May): The island’s 18,000 m² flower field fills with canola (rapeseed), turning the ground yellow against the blue Han River backdrop. The Seoul Metropolitan Government runs the Canola Flower Festival here each May — historically around May 10–19. After the festival, the island stays open and green through summer.
Autumn (September – October): The flower field transitions to buckwheat, which blooms white. A different look, equally photogenic, and far fewer crowds than the spring season.
Year-round: Weeping willows along the waterway, walking paths that loop the island, benches facing north toward the river, and a genuinely quiet atmosphere compared to the busier Yeouido and Ttukseom parks.
The Full Banpo Date Route
Seoraeseon sits inside Banpo Hangang Park, which gives you a natural route that strings three attractions together:
- Seoraeseon Island — the flower field and willow walk (start here)
- Banpo Rainbow Fountain (달빛무지개분수) — built into both sides of Banpo Bridge, 1,140m total length, currently holds the Guinness record for world’s longest bridge fountain. Operates April–October; check the Seoul Han River Parks site for current show times (usually every hour on the hour, about 20 minutes per show)
- Sebit Islands (세빛섬) — three floating artificial islands a short walk upriver, with restaurants, a rooftop terrace, cafés, and a live bar. Best at night when the LED exteriors reflect off the water
How to Get There
- Line 9 → Sinbanpo Station, Exit 1 — walk approximately 1.1km (around 15 minutes) to the island entrance
- Lines 3/7/9 → Express Bus Terminal Station, Exit 8-1 — 200m to the main road, then follow signs to Banpo Hangang Park (about 10 minutes total)
- Cycling: the Han River bike path runs directly past the island
- Car: Banpo Hangang Park has parking, but it fills up fast on weekends
Practical Notes
- Admission: Free. Open year-round, 24 hours
- Evening lighting: The island has lighting until 9 PM — the willow walk at dusk is genuinely nice
- Picnics: Allowed. Bring a mat — the grass areas are usable and there are benches, but they fill up on clear spring evenings
- Pets: Allowed on leash
