Small signs on each table politely remind customers: “No talking, no phone calls, just focus.” Ji-won, a 24-year-old job seeker, says, “My house is too noisy and libraries are always packed, but when I come here I feel like I can finally breathe. Everyone respects each other’s space.”

Social media posts show people spending up to six hours with just one cup of coffee, turning these spaces into a kind of shared study room that feels warmer than a library but more personal than working at home. Some cafes now offer private booths, white noise machines, and desk lamps — blurring the line between a café, a library, and a co-working space.

Experts say this trend reflects a unique aspect of Korean culture: the desire for “quiet togetherness” instead of complete isolation or noisy collaboration. Unlike Japan’s manga cafes or Western co-working spaces, where silence or chatter is absolute, Korea’s silent cafes maintain a careful balance of community and privacy. In a city that never really turns off, paying for a cup of coffee here is really about buying a small pocket of mental peace.

My Take:
Of course, I think it’s great that people can enjoy a sense of calm and personal space. However, I also believe that people who stay for more than 12 hours with just one cup of coffee should consider the café’s position and be mindful of the business too. (This is my personal opinion.)
