Cheongnamdae on the shore of Daecheong Lake near Cheongju served as the private presidential villa for five Korean presidents from 1983 to 2003, when it was opened to the public. The grounds hold the residential and office buildings used for presidential retreats, surrounded by a mature garden and forest along the lake shore. The combination of the historical significance, the lakeside setting, and the preserved presidential-era facilities gives the site a character unique in Korea — the scale of the grounds (180 hectares) and the quality of the landscape design reflect its original purpose. The Daecheong Lake view from the villa terraces is the defining image of the site.
