The Cheorwon basin in Gangwon-do is the primary wintering habitat in Korea for red-crowned cranes and white-naped cranes, with over 500 individuals using the agricultural fields and the Civilian Control Zone buffer from November through March. The DMZ buffer strip above the civilian zone has preserved the flat agricultural landscape and the undisturbed wetland habitats that the cranes require. The Cheorwon Peace Observatory gives a view over the buffer zone to the North Korean side of the Iron Triangle — the most militarised section of the DMZ in Korea. The Hantangang River basalt gorge north of Cheorwon town provides the geological complement to the wildlife habitat.
