Yeoncheon Hantangang River Geopark (연천 한탄강 세계지질공원)

📍 Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do

Yeoncheon County in northern Gyeonggi-do holds the most dramatic section of the Hantangang River basalt canyon system, designated as a UNESCO World Geopark. The basalt cliff sections at Jaeindaegyo Bridge and Dangpo Castle provide direct access to the canyon walls where the Quaternary volcanic lava flow geology is visible in cross-section. The Geongsun Gorge section holds suspended bridges over the river 50 metres below. The county is within the Civilian Control Zone approach and the combination of the geological heritage, the DMZ proximity, and the river landscape gives Yeoncheon a frontier character absent from other Gyeonggi counties.
