Soyang Dam in Chuncheon, completed in 1973, created Soyang Lake — the largest freshwater reservoir in Korea — in the Soyang River valley above the city. The lake-level cruise from the dam base to the Yanggu ferry port (about 90 minutes) gives access to the otherwise landlocked Yanggu highland basin. The dam face is accessible from the dam plaza and gives the direct perspective on the scale of the structure — 123 metres high and the largest embankment dam in Asia when built. The late afternoon light over the reservoir surface, with the surrounding mountain ridges reflected in the still water, is the defining image of the Chuncheon highland landscape.
