Chodang-dong in Gangneung is the origin of Gangneung sundubu — fresh soft tofu made with seawater — a regional specialty that has its own distinct preparation separate from the Seoul sundubu jjigae. The Chodang village holds a cluster of restaurants serving the tofu in various forms: plain with traditional accompaniments, in spicy stew, or as a course meal with the full range of sundubu preparations. The tofu is made fresh each morning and the restaurants that open earliest serve the day's first batch. Gangneung is two hours from Seoul by KTX and the Chodang sundubu circuit pairs well with the Gyeongpo Beach sunrise.
