Most Seoraksan visitors enter from Sokcho and never discover that the inland approach through Inje leads to Baedam Valley — a 9km trail along a pristine stream ending at Baedam Temple, where former president Chun Doo-hwan famously lived in exile after his 1988 trial. The trail follows pure snowmelt water through beech and maple forest with almost no development along the route. The shuttle bus from Yongdae-ri runs May through November and is the only motorized access; outside shuttle hours the valley belongs to serious hikers and the occasional Buddhist monk. The autumn color here, roughly mid-October, is among the best in the province.
