Anmok Beach in Gangneung is the origin of the Korean beach cafe culture — the first specialty coffee shops opened here in the 1980s near a bus terminal, serving coffee overlooking the East Sea, and the subsequent development of the area into a cafe strip of over 20 independent coffee roasters and specialty shops along the seafront has made it the most coffee-identified beach district in Korea. Gangneung Coffee City designation has attracted consistent specialty coffee industry attention. The cafe strip is most atmospheric in the early morning when the East Sea light is clear and the beach is empty. The Gangneung Coffee Festival in May is the most significant annual event in the Korean specialty coffee industry.
