The Goseong Unification Observatory at the northernmost accessible point of the Gangwon-do East Sea coast gives a view across the Military Demarcation Line into North Korea's Geumgang Mountain resort area — the only point in Korea from which Geumgangsan is visible from the South Korean side without a permit. The approach through the Civilian Control Zone requires a permit issued at the checkpoint 10 kilometres south; the process takes about 15 minutes for foreign passport holders. The coastline north of the checkpoint gives one of the most undeveloped beach environments in Korea — the buffer zone has preserved the natural coastal ecology for 70 years.
