Gwangju (Gyeonggi) Namhansanseong Fortress (광주 남한산성)

📍 Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do

Namhansanseong in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do (not to be confused with Gwangju, Jeollanam-do) is a UNESCO World Heritage mountain fortress that served as the emergency capital of Joseon during the 1636 Manchu invasion. The 11.7-kilometre fortress wall circuit along the mountain ridge is the most complete surviving example of a Korean mountain castle in terms of wall condition, gate structures, and interior facilities. The fortress interior holds the reconstructed government buildings and the historically significant Sueojangdae command post above the main gate. The fortress is accessible from Seoul by subway and bus in about 90 minutes.
