Haenam Daeheungsa Temple and Duryunsan (해남 대흥사·두륜산)
Daeheungsa Temple in the Duryunsan mountains near Haenam is historically the temple that preserved Buddhist culture during the most suppressive periods of Joseon anti-Buddhist policy — a function that gave it a unique role as cultural custodian. The approach avenue through 1.5 kilometres of old-growth forest before the temple gate is considered one of the most significant entrance sequences in Korean Buddhist architecture. The temple holds the calligraphy of the monk Chusa (Kim Jeong-hui) and the Pungno Tea House associated with the Korean tea ceremony revival. The Duryunsan ridge trail above the temple provides access to the Gyangmyeongsan cable car and views over the southern coastal landscape.
