Hoengseong is where Korea's most prized beef cattle — Hanwoo — are raised in the highest concentration in the country, and the county town has a cluster of butcher-restaurants where you buy raw cuts directly from farms at prices 30-40% below Seoul. The meal is transactional and unadorned: you select your cut by weight at a refrigerated counter, carry it to a table, and grill it yourself on a charcoal grate. There is no English menu and no tourist performance. The marbling quality of locally-raised Hanwoo here is genuinely different from beef sourced from other regions, something even casual eaters notice. This is a 90-minute drive from Seoul and almost entirely unknown to foreign visitors.
