Ulsanbawi — a massive granite formation rising from the Seoraksan ridge — is the most recognisable rock landmark in Gangwon Province and the trail from the Seoraksan National Park entrance to the base of the rock takes about 90 minutes each way. The final approach involves a metal staircase fixed to the cliff face that requires nerve but no technical climbing skill. The summit gives views over the entire Seoraksan massif and, on clear days, the East Sea coast below Sokcho. The trail is busiest from late September through mid-October when the autumn colour on the surrounding peaks is at its best. Arriving at the entrance gate at opening time is essential on autumn weekends.
