Sinan County in South Jeolla Province covers 1,004 islands and islets — the highest island count of any county in Korea — spread across the Yellow Sea tidal flat archipelago. Several islands have developed distinctive identities: Banwol and Bakji are connected by a tidal walkway that is exposed for short periods at low tide; Hongdo is a protected nature reserve known for its volcanic rock columns; Heuksando is the main administrative centre and ferry hub. The Sinan island ferry network operates from Mokpo and the slow travel approach — taking ferries between islands over several days — provides the most complete experience of the archipelago's varied character. Purple Island (Bandi-do and Bakji-do) is fully coloured purple as a tourist initiative.
