Cheongsan Island was designated Korea's first 'Slow City' in 2011, and unlike the branding suggests, it actually delivers. The island's interior is terraced barley fields that turn brilliant green in spring (April is peak), traditional thatched-roof stone houses still occupied by elderly farming families, and walking trails where you won't see another foreigner for hours. The island is famous domestically as a filming location for a classic Korean drama, but international visitors are rare. The ferry from Wando port takes 45 minutes; there are guesthouses in the village but booking ahead is essential on weekends. Wake early and walk the Dureong-gil trail before the day-tripper ferries arrive.
