Yeosu Hyangilam Cliff Hermitage (여수 향일암)

📍 Dolsan-eup, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do

Hyangilam is a Buddhist hermitage built directly into the rock face of the southern cliff of Dolsan Island, with the main hall occupying a cave chamber and the surrounding structures fitted between enormous granite boulders. The approach involves passing through several narrow rock passages that function as natural gates. The location — directly above the Korea Strait, facing east toward the open sea — gives it a sunrise orientation that draws significant crowds on New Year's Day; the ordinary day visit is considerably quieter. The surrounding cliff face is covered with camellia trees that bloom in winter, making the December-February visit one of the most visually distinctive in the Yeosu area.
