Bogil Island off the Wando coast is the site of the Bugyujeong garden complex built by the Joseon poet and scholar Yoon Seon-do (1587-1671) during his years of political exile. The garden — Seyeonjeong, Dongcheon Seokshil, Nakseodae, and Gyokjaeam — uses the natural stream, forest, and rock formations of the island valley as components in a garden design that is the purest surviving example of the Korean scholar's garden aesthetic. The garden is a National Heritage Site and the surrounding Bogil Island forest and coast retain the same landscape that Yoon Seon-do would have seen. The ferry from Wando takes about 50 minutes.
