Gangjin produced the finest Goryeo celadon pottery for over 400 years — the legendary jade-green glaze that Chinese Song Dynasty connoisseurs called 'the first under heaven' was fired in kilns along this coastline. The UNESCO-recognized kiln site district (there are over 180 individual kiln sites across a 17-kilometer stretch) is almost empty of tourists despite its world-historical significance. The Celadon Museum has exceptional pieces and good English signage, but the real experience is walking the actual kiln sites along the coastal path where you can still find pottery sherds in the soil after rain. Gangjin town itself is a sleepy market town where the seafood is excellent and nobody expects to see a foreign visitor.
