Hampyeong is known for its annual butterfly festival in May, but the ecological wetland park that hosts it is genuinely worth visiting any time from March through October and is almost completely empty outside festival weeks. The Hampyeong Ecological Park encompasses restored rice paddy wetlands where you can observe egrets, black-crowned night herons, and dozens of dragonfly species at close range from elevated wooden walkways. The scale of the wetland restoration — what was degraded agricultural land 20 years ago is now a functioning ecosystem — is quietly impressive. Bring binoculars; the viewing platforms are positioned to catch morning light from the east, making 7-9am the best birding window.
