Cheongpung Lake in Jecheon was created by the 1985 Chungju Dam impoundment of the Namhangang River, which submerged several historic villages and created a reservoir that now stretches through a spectacular mountain gorge landscape. The lake circuit road passes through the karst mountains of Chungcheongbuk-do with continuous water views and access to the Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex — a collection of rescued Joseon-period buildings relocated above the waterline before the dam filling. The Biran-ri suspension bridge over the lake narrows is the most photographed point. The area is accessible from Jecheon by bus; the full lake circuit by car takes about three hours.
