Songnisan's temple gets the visitors; the ridge trails above it are comparatively quiet. The summit of Cheonwangbong (1,058m) is reachable in about four hours from the Beopjusa trailhead and the views across the central Korean highlands are expansive in a way that reminds you this province has no coast — just layers of mountain. The trail passes through old-growth forest that survived because the national park was designated early (1967). Autumn foliage here is among the best in Chungbuk. The descent via Munjangdae ridge gives a different perspective on the temple complex below — worth planning as a loop rather than an out-and-back.
