The Jindo dog — the Jindo-gae — is one of the six natural monuments designated Korean native breeds and the only one native to a specific island. Jindo Island holds the primary breeding population and the Jindo Dog Theme Park on the western coast provides the educational programme around the breed's characteristics: independence, loyalty to one owner, and the hunting instinct that survived the island's isolation from mainland breeding influences. The Jindo Cultural Centre nearby documents the island's intangible heritage including the Ganggang Sullae women's circle dance and the Ssitgim-gut purification ritual — both UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity.
