The Jindo Sea Parting phenomenon occurs at Hoedong Village on Jindo Island's northeastern coast, where extreme low tides expose a 2.8-kilometre causeway between Jindo and the small island of Modo — a geological tidal flat walkway that has given rise to a legend of sea spirits and an annual festival in February or March. The crossing is accessible for about one hour at maximum exposure. Outside the festival period, the phenomenon occurs on smaller scales several times each month. The surrounding Jindo County is famous for the Jindo dog breed, the Jindo Ganggang Sullae circle dance, and the Ssitgim-gut shamanic purification ritual — giving the island an unusual density of intangible cultural heritage.
