Abai Village in Sokcho is a settlement founded by North Korean refugees who crossed the 38th parallel during the Korean War and could not return home. The community established a distinctive food culture based on North Korean recipes, of which the o징어순ae — squid stuffed with rice, vegetables, and blood sausage filling — is the most known. The village is still home to the descendant community and the original sundae shops that have been operating since the 1950s remain family-run. The hand-operated gondola crossing the canal to reach the village is still in operation. Visiting is a simultaneous food and living history experience.
