Baekdamsa Temple in Inje is accessible only by shuttle bus or a 7-kilometre forest valley walk from the Yongdae-ri car park — the remoteness enforced by the lack of road access to the temple makes it one of the most genuinely retreat-oriented temple experiences in Korea. The writer Han Yong-wun wrote his poetry collection Nimui Chimmuk (The Silence of Love) here while in retreat; former President Chun Doo-hwan spent his forced retirement here after 1988. The Baekdam Valley above the temple — continuing into the Inner Seorak ridgeline — is the most protected section of the national park and the autumn colour in the narrow valley is at its most saturated here.
