Songgwangsa in the Jogyesan forest near Suncheon is one of the three treasure temples of Korea (Sambo Sach'al) — designated as the sangha treasure temple for its role as the primary centre of Zen Buddhist practice and the producer of 16 National Preceptors throughout Korean history. The temple complex is one of the largest monastic communities in Korea and the Sungsam-cheon stream through the complex, the stone bridges, and the 800-year-old trees around the Guchyeong-rim gate give the approach a forest depth that few Korean temples match. The resident monastic community makes the temple a functioning practice centre rather than a heritage site, giving visitor contact a different quality.
