In 2019, Sinan County painted an island pink — the bridge connecting Banwol and Bakji islands, the roads, the rooftops, even the cats. It began as a practical measure to attract visitors to a depopulated archipelago island, and it worked almost too well. But beyond the Instagram novelty, the islands themselves are genuine working fishing communities where residents go about normal life surrounded by absurdist fuchsia infrastructure. The surrounding tidal flats at low tide turn vast and silver, making the pink accents stranger and more beautiful by contrast. Take the ferry from Amtae Island; the approach by sea is better than the bus route.
