Cheongju Chiksan Seowon and Korean Printing Heritage (청주 직지 인쇄 역사)

📍 Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do

Cheongju holds the Cheongju Early Printing Museum, documenting the printing of the Jikji — the world's oldest extant text printed with movable metal type, produced at the Heungdeoksa Temple in Cheongju in 1377, predating Gutenberg's Bible by 78 years. The original Jikji is held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France; the museum presents the replica and the broader history of Korean printing innovation. The Heungdeoksa Temple archaeological site is accessible within the museum grounds. The combination of the printing heritage and the adjacent Cheongju Urban Culture Centre gives the historic printing district a sustained cultural character in the city's identity.
