Goesan Hwayanggyegok Valley
Hwayanggyegok is a 3-kilometer valley carved by the Hwayang Stream through white granite and forested slopes — one of the most scenically dense short walks in central Korea. The Joseon neo-Confucian scholar Song Si-yeol chose this valley as his retreat in the 17th century, carving inscription tablets into the rocks that are still visible. The valley has nine named scenic points in the classic Korean tradition of numbered landscapes. The water is clear enough to see the streambed in detail. Most visitors come from Cheongju on weekends; arrive before 9am or on a weekday and you'll have long stretches entirely to yourself. The final stretch near Amseok cave is the most dramatic.
