The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival in January and February is the largest winter festival in Korea, held on the frozen Hwacheon reservoir where participants drill through the ice to fish for mountain trout (sancheoneo) in an activity that draws over one million visitors annually. The festival infrastructure on the ice includes dozens of fishing holes, ice sledding courses, and indoor aquarium facilities where visitors can fish through glass panels into illuminated underwater rooms. The surrounding valley temperature in January regularly reaches -20 degrees Celsius, giving the festival its authentic winter character. Hwacheon is accessible from Seoul by bus in about two hours.
